Just as the title insinuates, Shakespeare in the Park is an annual production held in the Maynardville Park in Wynberg. A real gem as far as outdoor theatre goes, I strongly recommend going to see whatever is showing - at the moment it is “As You Like It”, directed by Geoffrey Hyland.
Now I’m not really a huge Shakespeare fan (it might have something to do with having to concentrate too hard to understand what is going on) but a friend of mine is one of the characters in this particular production, so I thought I’d venture out PLUS I had never even heard of ‘As You Like It”, so my interest was sparked.
The story was easy to follow and had a South African twist which made it very funny. Whether you enjoy Shakespeare or not, I suggest going to one of these productions held at Maynardville (they also have ballet), there is something magical about seeing live theatre in the outdoors.
The production usually starts around 7:30pm so go a little earlier and take a picnic supper which you can have in the park. Don’t forget warm things because although it is summer in Cape Town at this time of year, the evenings still get chilly, and with the productions lasting about 3 hours on average – you don’t want to be worrying about how much your shivering disturbing the person next to you…
