Hout Bay market can be considered a ‘hidden gem’ not because it’s hidden, but because it is small and personal… Set-up under the trees on the Village Common every Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, the Hout Bay market showcases some really beautiful arts and crafts.
I set out on one of the hottest days this season (in my non air-conditioned car) to explore the market which is raved about by actual residents of the “Republic”. I was pleasantly surprised to find great quality crafts, clothes and jewellery – all set out for my perusal in the shade (thankfully). An added bonus is the very tempting smell of fresh donuts which permeates the market and persuades even the most health conscious among us to indulge…
Horse rides provide something fun for the kids to do while parents take a quick look around. The market isn’t big at all, but offers a good selection of stalls. With Christmas rapidly approaching (if you’re like me and haven’t even thought about presents yet) and if you’re unable to face another Saturday at the Biscuit Mill gorging yourself instead of doing some active shopping, I’d recommend visiting the Hout Bay market – just be aware that donut consumption is inevitable…
