The Hidden Gem of Julip

I’m going to go off topic for just one post – I know I usually write about outdoor things but on Wednesday night we explored a new little hidden gem, just off of Long Street in Cape Town.
The bar is called Julip and is hidden away in a little lane between the Dubliner and Longstreet Café.   I never even knew the place existed until Wednesday night…

Julip isn’t big, actually it’s kind of small, but there was no problem of us joining another table and making new friends.
At about 10pm (after a snack of goats cheese poppers and various other very delicious snacks), the owners of the guitars and microphones that were set up in the corner, stood up and started one of the most awesome jamming sessions I’ve seen in a long time.

The guys were from “Sons of Trout” a South African band which was pretty big a few years ago.
There was a pretty sizable crowd in the bar by the end of the first half, so when the door opened again I didn’t really notice who had walked in until she started singing.

Zolani from Freshly Ground had popped in and decided to join the guys, most of it was improvised but I was totally blown away firstly because Freshly Ground is one of South Africa’s biggest bands at the moment (plus I’m a huge fan) and secondly this was so informal, she was just a few feet away jamming with these guys.

And as if this wasn’t enough, another guy in the crowd pulled out a harmonica and joined the music making, and then someone hauled out a sax and a violin – so in the end there was a pretty sizeable band, and totally free…

If you are in Cape Town and on the lookout for some local flavour and a hidden gem, I’d say definitely pop into Julip, perhaps you can rub shoulders with some local celebs…
