We are so programmed to seek beauty in distant places and adventure in exotic destinations, that we seldom appreciate what “hidden gems” lie in our midst. We would do well to listen carefully to the beautiful words of William Blake from his poem Auguries of Innocence:
To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.
Recently I was walking Kili my dog on Fish Hoek beach, just two minutes from The St James. As Kili delighted in the space I watched the full moon rising over the Kogelberg Mountains. The sun setting in the west turned the surf gold and satin and the distant mountains were awash with light. It looked to me to be a painted masterpiece . . . and it was mine to enjoy alone. The rest of Cape Town was looking for beauty and adventure in their travel brochures, on TV or in the newspaper!
