Hidden Gem Lookout Point
As someone who is not from Cape Town originally (although I do consider myself a local at this stage), I still enjoy hopping in my car and taking a scenic drive around the peninsula. I usually take a different route every time to make sure I get in all the quaint little places along the coast although to be honest I stick to the Muizenberg side of the peninsula so that I can make surfing part of my trip.
This weekend I decided to drive the route of a running race I was planning on doing. The route follows the coastal road through Noordhoek and Kommetjie, small coastal villages right on the ocean and over Misty Cliffs through Scarborough – now usually I would carry on towards Cape Point if I were driving, but this time I went up Red Hill (of course this did nothing for my race training since I knew next time I would be doing this incredibly steep hill, on foot).
The top of Red hill it is quite peaceful with very few people around. There are hiking trails up there which I have done before, although I’ve always approached from the other direction and to be fair, haven’t done in a while. But what I’m writing this post about isn’t this already beautifully scenic route, but about the spectacular view you are met with as you come down into Simonstown...
From one of the many viewing points which you can pull off the road onto, you can see right across False Bay, a bird’s eye view really of the entire bay, whales (there are none at this time of year but I’d imagine you would see them clearly in whaling season) and the mountains in the distance. If you enjoy feasting your eyes on Mother Nature in her most pristine form, head for this spot and make sure you take your camera, you will want to try and capture it!!
