Lion’s Head

I have a confession…

I have lived in Cape Town for a total of 3 years now and have never been to the top of Lion’s Head. Terrible I know which is why I decided to tag along with a couple of friends on Friday night after work. Of course I’ve climbed Table Mountain (a couple of times), and I’d been half-way up Lion’s Head before – but Friday was my maiden voyage to the top and I was not disappointed.

Climbing Lion’s Head is always on the list of “To do’s” when in Cape Town. You don’t have to be an experienced walker to be able to climb to the top although if you are afraid of heights the chain ladder to the top could pose a bit of a problem, luckily there is an alternative (more gradual) route to the top making it accessible to those with an aversion to climbing up sheer cliff faces.

A leisurely stroll to the top should take about an hour for the moderately fit (took us about 40 minutes). Snacks and a cold beer (or champagne) make the climb worth the effort – not to mention the 360 degree views over the Atlantic Seaboard and Cape Town!!

Lion’s Head is particularly popular at full moon since you can hike up, watch the sun set and the moon rise which then gives you enough light to come down after sunset.
