Let's Do The Time Warp

On the weekend a bunch of us went to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Barnyard Theatre in Willowbridge. Truthfully I had only ever heard of Rocky Horror but had never seen it, nor did I know what the story was actually about – bar the transvestites and nerds. Of course I knew some of the music having danced to it many times before (my parents had the soundtrack on vinyl...) but nothing prepared me for the actual show.

Of course in true fashion our entire group got dressed up in rather questionable outfits, the boys donning fishnets and lipstick while the girls exposed as much as what they felt comfortable with. We got there with enough time to order a bucket of beer to give us some Dutch courage to face crowds in what we were wearing, order some pizza (you can eat in this theatre) and found our seats after making some rather rude comments about what other people were wearing.

The show was absolutely fabulous!! Dr Frank ‘n Furter had the highest platforms I’ve ever seen and managed to pull some pretty spectacular dance moves off without toppling to his death or at least to serious injury. The hunch back Riff-Raff had us in hysterics when he wasn’t fondling his “sister” Magenta (who makes a French Maids outfit seem dirty), Columbia was fantastic while Brad and Janet managed to pull off being totally nerdy as well as if they were like that in real life. The ultimate being which the Dr creates filled the role perfectly with a set of chiselled abs which had most of the females (and some of the males) in the audience drooling.

Not even 10 minutes into the show we were already dancing, clapping and singing along which in my books is a sure sign of a great show. Unfortunately this was the last weekend they were performing but make sure you check out what shows are on in Cape Town while you are here, there is nothing quite like getting tarted up to watch other people prance around on stage.
