The old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock is one of my favourite places to go on a Saturday morning when I just feel like doing something chilled.The actual Mill part of the building complex has been renovated and includes some awesome little antique furniture stores, cafes and an amazing bead shop, but what we usually go for is the market. This is not your regular farmers market, you won’t find anything here at bargain prices or straight out the ground, but you will get to taste (everyone has tester plates) and buy some amazing food and - one of our favourite reasons - is that this is the place where all the good looking, healthy, wholesome people congregate, or so it seems...

The main part of the market is under a huge, high roof and contains the bulk of the stalls overloaded with delicious treats like cheese, imported meats, fruit, vegetables, any kind of bread you can imagine – and (I might add ever so decadently) real bubbly to sip on while you are browsing through all the stalls. The inner part of the market holds more food stalls, clothing and accessory sections, and is usually where we congregate because they have long trestle tables where people can sit and dive into their purchases.

There is also usually some kind of band or musician providing entertainment in this section which makes the atmosphere very festive, especially after a few glasses of bubbly or a few locally brewed ales.

In the summer it can get very busy, but the inner section of the market has an open roof with shade cloth, making it an ideal spot to relax and just take in the vibe. For rainy winter days the market is just as fun (as we found out last Saturday) with a tent covering the inner section and the market being less busy, which means it is easier to get around and taste more goodies.

As far as hidden gems go, I’d say this is definitely something you should uncover on your stay in Cape Town. The market is open from 9am to 2pm every Saturday morning, I’d suggest going early to browse around, choose what you are going to indulge in for lunch and then get a place to sit and watch the people.
