Mzoli’s - A Hidden Gem in Guguletu
Last week I was invited to a friend’s birthday party (not sure if you can call it a party once you are over 25), and the invite said “…dress smart, bring drinks and be prepared for something different!”
Not knowing what to expect, we all congregated at a central spot where transport had been organized to carry all 15 of us to a “secret location”.
Turns out said “secret location” was in Guguletu (a township off the N2 highway) at a place called Mzoli’s. Mzoli's is a collection of plastic tables and chairs under a sheet metal roof, between the shanty houses of Guguletu. There is a butcher where you go and buy your meat after which they slap it all on a huge braai, with some very delicious basting sauce. It is then brought to your table on a big tray.
Cutlury, crockery and any other side dishes are supplied by the patrons (we had smarties and crisps on the side). Drinks can be brought (no corkage is charged), or you can go to the Shabeen (located next to the butcher), to buy Quarts of beer.
Cars bouncing with sound (literally), people dancing in the road, extremely friendly people who were obviously regulars and a general air of fun and camaraderie - are to be expected.
We all felt extremely safe and had a fantastic time. Food came to R30 each (the mountain of meat would have made a vegetarian shudder) and not having to drive home was a real treat.
This uncovered gem is not for the feint hearted, but if you are adventurous and want to experience authentic township vibe, take a trip to Mzoli’s – be sure to book though it gets VERY busy.
