Favourite thing to do in Cape Town
I have decided to talk about my most favourite thing to do in Cape Town, because
- I’m tired of the winter now and hope that by thinking about summer, it will come along a little faster, and
- Not many people take advantage of this and as a visitor to Cape Town you should make the most of it while you are here.
I’m referring to the Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts. Every Sunday from November to April, you can watch live music in the Kirstenbosch Botanical gardens. For between R30 and R50 you get entrance to the gardens and you get to see great bands performing on an open air stage.
What we usually do is pack a picnic basket full of snacks and wine, head to the gardens at around 12:00 to pick a spot on the grass. The bands only come on at about 17:00, so we lounge around on manicured lawns and admire some of the interesting plants and flowers as a pre-amble to listening to some awesome local and sometimes international bands, in one of the most beautiful settings in Cape Town.
A list of bands for the season is drawn up and distributed so that you can plan who you would like to support. Some of the bands last year included Seether, The Parlotones, Louise Carver, Love Jones and Gold Fish. Finishing at about 19:00 (and in summer the sun is still up at this stage), means you still have an early night to prepare for work the next day.
I would recommend trying to co-inside a visit to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens with a summer concert. The crowd is a mixture of all ages (I’ve seen my parents’ college friends there before) and the mood is festive, although I would book in advance to avoid standing in line on the day.
