A Hidden Gem In Newlands

The Montebello Estate in Newlands is home to the Montebello Design Centre – which I didn’t even know existed until someone told me about The Forge, a working studio which specializes in the craft of splitting and rivoting metal and metal forging. Upon doing some research into The Forge, which is an experience in itself and boasts a working Forge in the Castle of Good Hope as well as the studio at Montebello – I came to realize that the old Montebello Estate, is an art and design haven right in the middle of Newlands.

What is now known as the Montebello Arts and Design Centre was originally donated by Sir Cecil Michaelis to the University Of Cape Town. Showcasing local artists and craftsman, the complex which is in the old farm buildings of the estate boasts The Forge, a greenhouse with working nursery and studios situated in the old stables which still sport their original stall dividers. You can expect to find crafts such as jewellery, ceramics, metal forging, paper making and various forms of art.

There is also a lovely restaurant and organic deli farm shop where you can buy all sorts of delicious morsels. I would suggest spending a morning browsing through all the studios and buildings on the estate, not only getting the feeling that you might have stepped back in time with all the beautiful old buildings, but also revelling in the unique creative style which is truly South African.
