Crayfishing in Kommetjie

Between November and April there is great excitement in the Kommetjie area just off Long Beach as the crayfish season has arrived with a vengence. This favourite pasttime for many people is a very important livelihood for some. Although carfully controlled by Marine reservists and the government, the thrill and excitement of catching your own crayfish is quite something. The entire trip can be quiet exhilarating from the moment you leave the shore, to returning about two hours later with your quota. Once the nets are dropped, time is whiled away admiring the view and other marine life out and about. The best part of the entire trip is when the nets are pulled up from the deep. Not a breath is heard until the catch is seen - and sometimes the catch consists of others besides crayfish such a dog shark, a fish or two and even hermit crabs. However, the piece de resistance is being able to enjoy your crayfish later that day whether it is prepared simply with mayonnaise, braaied with a lick of lemon butter or a thermadore sauce.
