But rather than being miserable, for those who know where to look this is a very special time. In The Cape the clear days between the rain are the crispest most refreshingly beautiful days of the year – positively effervescent. The Southern Right Whales have begun to arrive at our shores from Antarctica and the flowering season is about to begin in earnest. Already the Aloes are punctuating the hills and gardens with blazing red and orange flames. The King Proteas (our National flower) are in full bloom in the mountains - remarkable, enormous, handsome and unusual.
The Winelands are also special at this time of year. The leaves have begun to turn red and yellow, adding a colourful dimension to the stately farms. On numerous farms many of the wines have just been bottled. The frenetic pace of the harvest season and subsequent vat fermentation has passed and the winemakers are noticeably more relaxed and more likely to share a glass of wine with their visitors!
Meanwhile in the bushveld the best time of year for game viewing has begun. The deciduous trees have lost their leaves and the grass has died, increasing visibility and facilitating game viewing. The natural water is drying-up, forcing the animals to visit the permanent water sources. The night-time temperatures are cold and the daytime temperatures are perfect for walking.
