For me, winter in the Cape means less beach time but more hiking so I’ve been on a mission to make notes of all the walks I haven’t done yet, and report back on the Hidden Gems I manage to find with a note or two to help you decide which walk would best suit you.
One of the walks which I want to do as soon as we have a rainless weekend is Skeleton Gorge which starts in Kirstenbosch Gardens and ends at the top of Table Mountain, there is even a dam which - if it is a nice day - you can have a quick dip in before heading back down.
From Cecilia Forest you head up Skeleton Gorge which is very steep and has ladders to help get you to the top – not for those afraid of heights or who have declared themselves couch potatoes. Once at the top you have magnificent views in all directions and the Hely-Hutchinson Dam makes for perfect photo opportunities.
On the way down you want to find Nursery Ravine which is also very steep and caution needs to be taken, although you are awarded with more amazing views and fascinating plant species which should take your mind off of any muscle strain you might experience.
The trail is well sign-posted and takes the whole day so be prepared for a challenging hike, but one well worth the effort.
