This weekend found us lounging on the grass under big sun umbrellas, overlooking breathtaking mountains in the distance, sipping decadently on white wine. This could describe a number of places in the winelands region of South Africa but the wine farm we were on was called Allee Bleue and the occasion was a 30th birthday party.
To be honest I’d never heard of this farm before so I was quite excited to try some place new. I was pleasantly surprised as we drove in down a tree lined avenue and along a little road through the vines to the Bistro, right on the edge of a grassy area with grass so brilliantly green and inviting that I almost forgot my shoes in the car.
Tables and chairs set up under a huge oak tree were elegantly adorned with white cloths and vases of flowers. We were seated at a long table, already groaning under bottles of wine and picnic baskets which catered for meat eaters and vegetarians, filled to the brim with all sorts of delicious deli treats.
After making sure everything edible was consumed, we retired to the grass which they provided blankets for as well as sun umbrellas to make sure we didn’t burn. Its little details like this which make me want to speak about a place and of course return to. Allee Bleue has wedding facilities as well as a small hotel and beer garden. Make sure you stop in if you are staying at The Franschoek – you will leave feeling incredibly relaxed and at peace with the world.
