Cycling for Fun…

This weekend Cape Town was buzzing with excitement and anticipation.  People from all over the country and even further afield, converged on the Mother City for the Cape Argus Cycle Tour.   This is a 109km race which starts in town and takes cyclists out towards the Peninsula through Kalk Bay, Fishoek and Simons Town.  Once past the Peninsula National Park you stick to the coast and head towards Noordhoek and Chapman’s Peak.

Once you have tackled Chappies you enter Hout Bay to thousands of spectators who have been ‘trapped’ in town for the day with all of the road closures.  From Hout Bay cyclists trudge up Suikerbossie and then it’s a gentle downhill past Llandudno, Camps Bay and Clifton, through Sea Point and finally over the finish line.

This incredibly well organized event is very popular amongst the cycling fraternity as well as non-cyclists who are just up for the challenge.  The city of Cape Town basically grinds to a halt to allow the roads to be closed for the race which means that there are just that many more spectators and supporters lining the route, clapping and offering encouragement to all the cyclists.  This year also saw the likes of Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong competing, he seemed quite excited about the race and said that this is the first time he has competed in an event of this size – I hope he wasn’t disappointed although he did come 9th, our South African boys showing him just how tough we get made here in Africa :)

I had hoped to do this event this year but running got in the way of get my bum saddle ready – I’m going to try again next year and  would encourage you to do the same – entries open in September,  you have to be quick though because numbers are limited!
