The Franschhoek area is renowned for its food, wine and places to stay and this past weekend I got to stay, eat, drink and spoil myself in this hidden gem.

Franschhoek is an absolute haven surrounded by magnificent mountains, whether up on the hillside or in the village, the views are quite majestic across the valley. My reason for visiting Franschhoek this time, besides the much needed escape from Cape Town, was to discover and experience the South African Cheese Festival that was held over the weekend. During my travels, however, I managed to discover a whole lot more hidden in this little valley.
A boutique experience in the form of my accommodation was most enjoyable and out of this world. My afternoon, after my arrival, was spent with Michelle Moolman and her team at Esprit de Beaute, being thoroughly spoilt and pampered. Michelle is brilliant and my array of beauty treatments were some of the best I have ever had. Having originally been at Klein Genot Hotel, Michelle has started on her own and what a find this was. Reasonably priced and covering just about any treatment you would like, she is fabulous at making you feel at home from the moment you arrive and once finished you don’t want to leave, well worth a visit whilst staying in Franschhoek.

My next hidden gem of discovery, well not quite for me, but something that should without a doubt be tried when in Franschhoek, is dining at the bistro in the main road and a minutes walk from The Franschhoek Retreat, French Connection. A firm favourite amongst locals as well as me, this little restaurant is simply superb. There is a warm, intimate and inviting atmosphere and the staff are fabulous. Every time, I have been here, my food has been faultless. Whenever I am in Franschhoek I always say to myself I must try something different, broaden my horizons and experience something new, but lo and behold I still keep going back. My risotto with asparagus, artichokes and pecorino cheese were creamy and delicious, my veal with porcini sauce simply divine and the desserts are to die for, try the pecan nut tart with vanilla crème fraiche!!
The South African Cheese Festival is a major attraction every year. Held on the Bien Donne Wine Estate between Paarl and Franschhoek, this festival is all about cheese and anything that goes with cheese, you name they’ve got it! The best part, of course, is the tasting of fabulous South African cheeses and with exceptional South African wines and honestly, what more could one ask for in a perfect pairing.
